The Haven Handmade Story
I'm Beth, the owner and maker behind Haven Handmade. I've loved sewing since I was about ten years old, but never imagined I would turn my creative outlet into my profession. Whenever anyone complimented my sewing projects by saying I should sell them, I would brush the comment off, thinking that turning my hobby into a job would make it less enjoyable.
Well, it turns out I was wrong about that.
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, life turned upside down, which led to the decision to try turning my love of sewing into my career. As I planned what my shop would be called and what it would sell, I tried to think of what I was most grateful for. My family and my home were at the top of that list. I kept thinking about how our home was the safest place for us and how we were spending a lot more time in the kitchen and around the dining room table. It felt natural to start my business making kitchen linens because that particular spot in our house was the backdrop for the most important things happening. And "haven" was the perfect word to describe how I felt about my home and about my kitchen in particular.
As is the way with most things, Haven Handmade has changed since it started. I tried out free motion appliqué on a whim a few months after opening Haven Handmade and accidentally found a sewing technique that I now consider my unique niche. I made a little appliqué that looked like my daughter, Joanna, and turned it into a small pillow/doll. This led to the creation of Huggables, custom made mini pillows with free motion appliquéd portraits. From Huggables, I moved on to stitching free motion appliquéd designs on everything from placemats to pillows to travel drawing sets. Now, free motion appliqué is the cornerstone of what makes Haven Handmade products unique.
As Haven Handmade has grown and evolved, my love of sewing and making special items has also increased. I'm so grateful that I have gotten the opportunity to create a job I love along with meaningful gifts and home goods for you and those you love.
