This Week in My Haven: No. 22

This week in my haven I finally felt like I could start planning for spring, even though there are mounds of snow taller than my daughter outside. I love the start of each new season. It always feels good to look forward to the change of seasons. I get to wear clothes that have been in the back of my dresser for months, cook recipes that I haven’t tasted recently, and see the outdoor scenery transform. I know it happens the same way year after year, but I never get tired of it.

Shop announcements: More new items are being added every week!

  • You can now order custom made dolls from the Haven Handmade shop! These would make an adorable addition to an Easter basket this spring.

  • I made an appliqued rendition of my home and want to offer something like that in the shop too. I’m having trouble deciding whether they should be pillows or framed pieces. What would you prefer?

What I’m thinking about: Getting my home ready for spring. Peter, with a little help from Joanna and me, turned our coat closet into a shoe storage bench and coat hanging nook. It’s so much more functional and beautiful than the closet was, and it has me thinking about other ways we can perk things up around the house. I’m thinking about making new throw pillows for the couch and a tablecloth and matching cloth napkins for the dining room. I can do both of those while it’s still dreary and cold, but once I see a glimmer of warmer, sunnier weather on the horizon I’m going to want to start planning our garden and landscaping.

What I’m making: I made progress on my red bamboo knit Orosi top (pattern from Sew Beautiful by Kennis Wong). Did you see the photo on my Instagram stories this week? I am hoping to finish it this weekend.

What I’m cooking: I made French macarons on Valentine’s Day! It was one of my goals for 2021 to finally try making them. I took a virtual cooking class on Cozy Meal that walked me through the process with an experienced chef. There were some inaccuracies on the ingredients list provided before the class began, but thankfully I still had everything I needed on hand. There was also a bit too much going on at once during the class, and since Joanna was trying to participate with me, it got a little overwhelming. However, I am still glad I had the chance to take the class and follow along with the step-by-step process. My macarons turned out delicious and now I have a lot more confidence making them from a written recipe.

What I’m reading: I mentioned last week that I was reading a comic book (The Umbrella Academy), and I’m honestly not sure what I thought of it. I think I’m just not that good at reading comic books because I sometimes forget to pay attention to all the visual details and miss out on parts of the story. Even though I don’t necessarily enjoy reading comic books to myself, I do enjoy reading them to Joanna. We just read The Cardboard Kingdom, and it was such a delightful read. It’s all about imagination and friendship and kindness.

I’m off to work on some more sweet, lovable little dolls. I hope you have a warm and restful weekend.
