This Week in My Haven: No. 24

This week in my haven has felt pretty normal. I guess getting almost to the one year anniversary of when we changed our lives due to the pandemic has a way of altering the definition of “normal”. By any other standards, our current routine would not be considered normal at all! I keep wondering how I’m going to feel when we make it to March 16th, which is the both the one year anniversary of moving into our home and of beginning to quarantine. Last March I certainly didn’t think that life would look like this, and that is neither positive nor negative.

What I’m thinking about: Popularity. I’ve never been a person who cared about being popular. In my own heart I could care less about how many followers I have on Instagram or how many “likes” a post gets. However, as the owner of Haven Handmade, I know I need to care at least a little about these things. Finding a way to reconcile these contradictory feelings will probably always be a challenge for me, but it’s been on my mind more this week.

What I’m making: Joanna and I have a little sewing project lined up to work on together. She came with me to the fabric store to get some supplies and picked out a fat quarter of quilting cotton with a puppy dog motif on it. She wants to use it to make an outfit for her 18 inch dolls to wear. We are going to use the free Popover doll dress pattern from Oliver + S as our base. Joanna wants it to have a gathered skirt instead of a straight skirt though, so I’m going to shorten the dress to shirt-length and add on a wide gathered dirndl skirt instead.

What I’m cooking: This weekend I am planning to make this spinach quiche recipe from Smitten Kitchen and a loaf of sourdough to go with it. I want to make something lemony as a sweet to go with it, but I haven’t picked a recipe yet. Do you have any favorite lemon dessert recipes?

What I’m reading: I am still reading Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid this week. I’m still enjoying the story and will share more when I finish up reading. Let me share this little article for now instead. It talks about how our purchases during the pandemic are symbols of our hopes for the future. I could really relate to this even though I haven’t actually bought anything that represents my hopes for getting back to a more “normal” state. I just have a bunch of dress patterns I want to sew for myself once I have somewhere to wear a dress again!

We are ready for the weekend to begin around here. Here’s hoping it is a good one for us all!
