This Week in Our Haven: No. 26
This week in our haven we saw the unpleasant side of spring in Chicago: cold, dreary, wet, and windy. But besides the weather and adjusting to the clocks changing it has been a pretty regular week. I am continuing to add to the Huggables line little by little. If there is anything you’d really like to see me make, please don’t hesitate to let me know. It brings me so much joy to know that I am creating something that others appreciate.

What we’re talking about: With Easter and Joanna’s birthday right around the corner in the first weeks of April, we’ve been talking about what she has on her wishlist. There are a few things that I know I want to get her, including a shirt or two from Makoshey and a project box from Green Explorers Club. I also like to make sure to fill some of her Easter eggs with non-food items. Would you like to see a list of creative items to put in Easter eggs that aren’t food or candy? Or do you have an idea that you’d like to share? I’d love to hear it!
What we’re making: Joanna and I pulled out the paints earlier this week and made some Easter cards. At first we tried to do some fingerprinted designs like this, then we switched to using paint markers. We used them to trace Easter themed cookie cutters and add our own little details. Painting our own cards was a nice creative diversion this week and got me thinking more about fun Easter activities.
What we’re cooking: We had nachos for dinner last night and it felt like such a treat. We loaded tortilla chips with seasoned ground turkey, black beans, onions, peppers, homemade cheese sauce, guacamole, salsa, sour cream, cilantro, and lettuce. Joanna made the guacamole almost all by herself while Peter and I chopped ingredients and worked at the stove. It is so nice when all three of us get involved in making our meal. This was a great meal for having lots of helpers because there are so many different little components. Even the youngest helpers can be given a job to do!
What we’re reading: I’ve mentioned before that Joanna is a big fan of reading comic books. Her favorites right now are from the DC Super Hero Girls series, with Weird Science being her newest title. While they are written for slightly older readers than Joanna, she still really enjoys the stories and can get completely absorbed in reading them to herself. Reading comic books has been a perfect bridge for her between picture books and chapter books. The language in comic books is at a more advanced level, like in a chapter book, but there is plenty of visual support to understand the story.
It looks like we’re going to have a nice weekend ahead of us before we get hit by another round of rain. If the same is true where you are, I hope you are able to get out and enjoy the sunshine this weekend!
