In My Haven: August 11
This week in my haven I mostly worked on behind the scenes tasks like testing new designs, bookkeeping, and getting a new display piece ready for upcoming markets. I'm really excited about one of the new designs I'm getting ready for fall. You may have seen a little peak of it on my Instagram Stories this week. If not, stay tuned. I should have it ready for ordering by the beginning of September. The design lends itself to lots of variation, so it's going to make a great pattern too. I'm planning to make a video tutorial to go along with this pattern so that you can try it out too. This new pattern has me feeling inspired and excited for fall even though I can't believe that summer is already winding down. There is just one week of summer break left in our haven, and I can barely believe it! Time has flown this summer, and I can definitely say it's because we were having so much fun. I hope the same has been true for your summer!
Gratitude
I don't have any particular products or designs I want to highlight in this space this week. Instead I want to mention a few moments from the past week or so that have made me feel especially grateful that I know how to sew.
Joanna was poking around in my sewing room and found a piece of fabric that she wanted to use. She decided we should sew a dress together. I'm so grateful for the time we get to spend working on projects together and for the chance to share my love of sewing with her.
Peter needed a pair of dress pants for a funeral we were attending, but he wasn't happy with how an old pair fit anymore. Instead of having to make a last minute trip to a store, I was able to alter them so that they fit more comfortably.
Last week we went to the Indiana State Fair to see Joanna's 4-H projects on display. She won a stuffed animal on the midway, but it started to come un-sewn almost immediately. I was able to stitch it up and make it better than new.
When we were visiting my sister and her kids last weekend, my nephew commented that I was dressed like I was ready to sew and then asked me if I would sew something with him. We decided to make a little tablecloth for their playroom table. It only involved hemming the four edges of a rectangle of cloth, but I was honored that he asked me to show him how to sew.
Sewing permeates my life in so many ways. It's my hobby and my profession, but it also provides a way for me to build relationships and take care of those I love. I am so deeply grateful that sewing has become such a big part of my life because it serves to bring me closer to everyone I make something for.
More From My Haven
Since life isn't all business, here’s a little more about what’s happening in my haven this week.
What I'm Cooking: This week I made two recipes from one of my favorite cookbooks, Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables (Joshua McFadden). We had the Squash and "Tuna Melt” Casserole and the Rigatoni with Broccoli and Sausage. I highly recommend checking out this cookbook if you haven't already.
What I'm Reading: I'm reading The Dressmaker (Kate Alcott) and still enjoying it even though I didn't have much time to read this week.
What Joanna is Reading: Joanna and I are reading Wildwood (Colin Meloy, Carson Ellis). We are both really enjoying it so far.
What’s Making Me Happy: Spending time with family and soaking up the relaxed summer pace for just awhile longer.
What's happening in your haven this week?
Warmly,
Beth
