In My Haven: January 6

This week in my haven has not been the week I was expecting to have. The second week of winter break is supposed to be full of lazy days wearing pajamas until practically lunch time, trying out Christmas presents, and resting up for the new year ahead. Unfortunately, we had a frozen pipe burst in our home while we were away visiting family for Christmas and have been dealing with the aftermath of that instead. My sewing room is located right below the burst pipe and is in need of serious repair work (along with two thirds of our basement and most of our kitchen). As you can probably guess, having our home, which is normally such a safe and happy haven for us, dismantled by this has been devastating and extremely stressful. However, we are also grateful that the only things damaged are just things. We will eventually be able to repair or replace anything that the water ruined.

That being said, our home is in a state of upheaval right now and I am not able to do any sewing at present. I hope that I won't have to keep the Haven Handmade shop closed for long, but it's not something I can really predict at this moment. This situation is really good practice for taking things one day at a time—something, as a natural over-planner and over-thinker, I'm not very good at. Please be patient and stick with me as I get reorganized and make improvements behind the scenes. When I can get back to sewing, I know I'm going to have so many ideas built up that I'll have a mountain of great things to share!

More From My Haven

Since life isn't all business, here’s a little more about what’s happening in my haven this week.

  • What I'm Cooking: This noodle salad is a favorite of ours that makes great lunch leftovers the next day. We usually skip making the chile-scallion oil (even though it's really tasty) and just add a dab of sriracha or another chili sauce.

  • What I'm Reading: The Last Nomad: Coming of Age in the Somali Desert (by Shugri Said Salh) is the book I'm reading right and it's so interesting. Learning about Salh’s relationships and what nomadic life in Africa was like for her is intriguing to say the least.

  • What Joanna is Reading: She is really into fantasy right now! Prince Caspian (Book 4 of the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (J.K. Rowling) and Redwall (Brian Jacques) are the three books she is currently in the middle of reading.

What's happening in your haven this week?

Warmly,

Beth
