In My Haven: January 20

This week in my haven I worked on getting a temporary sewing space set up and I sewed for the first time in almost a month. It was so very good to do a little sewing after such an extended and unplanned break! I still have a long ways to go before I am fully set up again, but I have enough supplies and space to reopen the Haven Handmade shop. It is possible that I will once again need to close the shop temporarily at some point in the next month as the rest of the repair work gets done. So if you want to order anything for upcoming occasions like a birthday, housewarming, baby shower or Valentine's Day, it would be best to order right away. Nothing would make me happier than having a few new orders to work on sewing!

Sweet Home Chicago

Haven Handmade designs have always been inspired by the people and the places that make us feel like we are truly home. For so many Chicagoans, the city flag symbolizes this feeling of belonging. It felt fitting to choose this design as the first one to sew in 2023 as I reflect on all the reasons why home is such an important place to me. This design, with the iconic six-point red star and bands of aqua blue, whether it's on a keychain, a pillow or a tote bag, is a reminder of what a unique and magnificent city Chicago is.

More From My Haven

Since life isn't all business, here’s a little more about what’s happening in my haven this week.

  • What I'm Cooking: Pasta with a butternut squash sauce and bacon was my favorite meal of the week. I didn't follow a recipe, but this one (minus the eggs) is pretty similar.

  • What I'm Reading: I just finished reading The Last Nomad: Coming of Age in the Somali Desert (by Shugri Said Salh) and it was so so good. Shugri doesn't gloss over the difficult aspects of her life and Somali culture, but she also tells her story in a way that shows respect for the places and people who shaped her.

  • What Joanna is Reading: Last night we read the first chapter of A Tale of Magic (Chris Colfer) and Joanna seems intrigued. It's a long book, so I'm sure I'll have more to share about it in the next couple weeks!

What's happening in your haven this week?

Warmly,

Beth
