This Week in My Haven: No. 12

This week in my haven had a few surprises--some good, some less so. Let’s start with the not-so-good. A porch pirate stole an order that was waiting to be picked up by my mail carrier! Luckily, I was able to remake the order without too much difficulty. It was just so disheartening to have my work taken and know that the person who took it will likely have little regard for the product they stole or its value. Now for the good surprise! I received an unexpected package from my uncle/godfather. It was a box full of items that belonged to my aunt/godmother who died of cancer about a year and a half ago. It was really uplifting and reminded me how many supporters I have.

Shop announcements:

  • If you want your order to arrive in time for Christmas, I recommend ordering by Sunday, December 13th or earlier!

  • Some brand new items will be coming to Haven Handmade in January.

What I’m thinking about: I have been thinking a lot about what I want to learn and get better at in 2021. I have learned so much in the two and half months since I opened Haven Handmade, but it has mostly been through trial and error. I want to move past that phase and put effort into learning more about specific aspects of running my creative business, like how to market my business and build a community through social media. I feel like there is so much I need to learn, but I’m going to have to prioritize what to focus on first. Over the past twelve weeks I have had to learn a little about a broad range of topics, and in the new year I want to delve deeper into a select few topics.

What I’m making: I finally finished making matching flannel pajama pants for Peter, Joanna, and myself! However, we have not all had our pairs clean at the same time to get a picture. I also still need to make the pajama top that Joanna requested. And I have so many gifts to sew still! I’m confident that I will get them completed in time... Maybe. Hopefully.

What I’m cooking: We mostly stuck to tried and true dinners this week. We had meatloaf one night, a frittata another night, chicken breasts and salad last night. Everything was tasty, but nothing required a recipe. Sometimes it’s nice to rely on cooking a meal without having to follow a recipe and measure everything out. For dessert, I did try a new recipe though. Joanna and I made these gingerbread cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. They were really yummy, but I have to share something funny about making them. We didn’t have enough ground cinnamon for the recipe, so I had to create my own by grating cinnamon sticks with a microplane grater. It was so messy! But it smelled really good!

The best twenty minutes of my week

The best twenty minutes of my week

What I’m reading: I am still reading The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow and really enjoying it. I don’t want to share much more about the book until I finish it, but I do want to say the best moment of this week was when Joanna, Peter, and I were all gathered in the living room with our books. It might have been only twenty minutes, but they were twenty perfect minutes.

I hope you get at least twenty perfect minutes this weekend!
