This Week in My Haven: No. 6
This week in my haven was... ordinary. Nothing too much stands out. I have mostly been working on a custom order of holiday items and thinking about ways to connect with other local small business owners and makers. Just because this week was pretty ordinary, doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy my work or take time to appreciate the fact that I even get to do this though. If there is anything that ties together the six weeks that Haven Handmade has been in business, it is just how lucky I feel to be able to try doing something new and to be here sharing it with you.

What I’m thinking about: Hunkering down. With the weather turning colder and the number of coronavirus cases on the rise, I know I am going to be spending more time indoors and at home. It’s easy to feel the cabin fever rising at just the thought of this. In an effort to stave off this feeling my thoughts have been turning to making home the place that I want to be, not just the place I have to be. I don’t really have a concrete plan for how to do that yet, but it’s what’s occupying my mental space a lot.
What I’m making: Did you see my finished Halifax hoodie? It is so cozy and warm. I definitely need to make more versions of this pattern in other fabrics. For my next version, I want to try making it in a jersey knit or French terry. But before I get to that, I have plans to make a set of matching flannel pajama pants for Peter, Joanna, and myself. You’d think I’d have done something like that before, but I haven’t. I can’t decide whether to use this pattern (which I would have to adapt for making out of flannel instead of knit fabric) or this pattern (which includes girl’s and women’s sizes, but not men) though.
What I’m cooking: I am so excited about my cooking plans this week! I decided to go all out with Halloween themed cooking this year since we won’t be trick-or-treating and getting a bucket of candy. (I’m honestly not sorry about that at all. I could care less about eating most of the candy given out on Halloween, but if it’s in my house I will eat it.) My plan is to make two snack boards for Halloween--one sweet and one savory. On the sweet one I’ll have cream puffs decorated to look like pumpkins, milano cookie ghosts, and chocolate-covered strawberry witch hats. On the savory board I’ll be making bacon wrapped apricots, cheese and crackers cut out with Halloween cookie cutters, roasted sweet potato slices, orange bell peppers, and mandarin orange “pumpkins”. I’m no food stylist, so it probably won’t look like anything that you’d admire on Instagram or Pinterest. I will probably share a picture of it anyway, even if it turns out terribly. I care more about making and eating the food than I do about how it looks at the end.
What I’m reading: Even though I should have been reading The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett so that I am ready to talk about it with my book club next week, I have spent more of my evening watching old episodes of The Great British Baking Show and a new Netflix show called The Queen’s Gambit. The Queen’s Gambit was based on a book, so it sorta counts. Right?
I hear the Christmas fabrics calling my name, so I better get back to work! I hope you have a fun and safe Halloween weekend.
