This Week in My Haven: No. 16
This week in my haven has not been the simple return to our school and work routine that I was expecting. Oh well. Maybe next week we will settle back into our schedule. The high point of the week was definitely celebrating my birthday. I got to be with people I love and eat chocolate cake, so it was a good day. The low point was worrying about the state of our nation after the violence that took place in our Capitol. Going from my high point on Tuesday to my low point on Wednesday gave me emotional whiplash. I’m hoping that a weekend to relax will help me sort things out and get back on balance.
Shop announcements: Did you see the new items I put up in the shop this week?
The floral print on the pocket of the yellow tote in my shop was the inspiration for a whole new collection of kitchen linens. I will be making placemats, cloth napkins, aprons, tea towels and totes that use this floral print and coordinating solids. The colors in this collection also coordinate well with the golden yellow, steel gray, and royal blue that I had in my shop in the fall.
My second collection of new items is called “Color Your Haven” and is all about getting creative and colorful! I have chosen three coloring page prints featuring unicorns, dinosaurs, and roses that can be colored in with fabric markers. These make an excellent gift for creative kids, but I won’t tell anybody if you want to eat off a dino placemat that you colored for yourself!
I will be continuing to add new items as the days and weeks progress, so keep an eye on social media for updates. There are limited quantities of most products, so don’t wait to buy something if you like it!
What I’m thinking about: Violence. White supremacy. Injustice. Policing. Political divides. There is no way I can possibly package my thoughts into a concise paragraph for you. The best I can do is to say that I am disgusted and dismayed by the actions of Donald Trump and his supporters for so many reasons. I can also direct you to a few articles that I found helpful in gaining a better understanding of the chaotic events that took place in D.C. this week.
A timeline summarizing the events and how one led to the next
An article about the role of police force
Two articles comparing the use of force against Black Lives Matter protesters and Pro-Trump groups (one, two)
What I’m making: I currently am so focused on all the new items I want to sew for the shop that I have no personal sewing projects to work on or even planned out! I did get the book Sew Beautiful by Kennis Wong as a Christmas gift, so I hope to make a trip to the Vogue Fabric Store in Evanston sometime soon to get fabric for a new project or two. I can really imagine wearing every pattern from this book!
What I’m cooking: I don’t really have any new recipes or cooking plans to share this week either. As I was meal planning yesterday I did pick a couple new recipes to try from my new cookbooks (New World Sourdough by Bryan Ford and Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables by Joshua McFadden), so I do have cooking plans to look forward to.
What I’m reading: I believe I promised you my thoughts on The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow and never delivered it. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I loved the narrative voice of January, the main character, and her journey of discovering her past. It also reminded me of many of my previous beloved reads where characters found themselves transported to other worlds, like The Chronicles of Narnia, A Secret Garden, and Harry Potter.
Time to get started on the rest of my to-do list! Hoping you have a relaxing, safe weekend.
