This Week in My Haven: No. 18

This week in my haven felt kind of like one long “blursday.” Tuesday felt like Monday. On Wednesday I kept thinking it was Thursday. Is today actually Friday? I’m not sure. The week was not without its bright spots though. On Monday, as an act of service in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we picked up litter from the sidewalks as we walked our puppy. It also made me very happy to watch the inauguration with my family during our lunch break on Wednesday. What made you happy in your haven this week?

What I’m thinking about: Marketing. I think marketing and bookkeeping are tied for most challenging aspects of running my own business! Self-promotion just doesn’t come naturally to me, and finding ways to do it that emphasize real connections with potential customers isn’t easy. I am working on it though, and have found a group of other creative professionals to learn from and with. (I also made this new introduction video for my Instagram profile!)

What I’m making: I made two projects this week that are gifts for family members, so I can’t share any information about them yet. I’ll share photos of them on Instagram next week. Until then, all I can say is that I hope they like them as much as I do! I have also been playing around with thread sketching (also called free motion embroidery) on my new sewing machine. I need to keep practicing, but it’s really fun!

What I’m cooking: My best cooking moments this week were cooking with Joanna and Peter. I made a loaf of banana bread and a pot of butternut squash soup with Joanna. Actually, Joanna will probably tell you that she made the soup and I just helped. We used this oldie-but-goodie from Smitten Kitchen. With Peter, I cooked up some sourdough tortillas. The recipe was from New World Sourdough, and they were delicious even though the dough was really sticky! I ended up using my stand mixer instead of kneading by hand and then I chilled the dough for a few hours to make them easier to roll out. The tortillas even reheated well the next day in the microwave with a damp paper towel wrapped around them.

What I’m reading: I am still reading the same two books as last week (So you want to talk about race by Ijeoma Oluo and Kopp Sisters on the March by Amy Stewart). So instead of talking about them, let me share this fascinating article about how sourdough starters were a highly-valued possession during the Gold Rush in California. Such an interesting, short read for anyone interested sourdough, baking, or history.

It’s back to the sewing machine for a little bit longer for me and then Friday movie night. What are you doing this weekend?
