This Week in Our Haven: No. 31

This week in our haven has been...something. It’s hard to sum up this week in a word or two. Work-wise, I’ve been busy creating a few custom orders (at least one of which will be available regularly). This week also had a few “first time since quarantine began last March” moments. I got a professional haircut, which felt like a wonderful gift to myself. It was also really great to reconnect with the wonderful women at Ara Salon, where I’ve had my hair cut for years. The biggest event of the week, though, was Joanna returning to school! We were all both nervous and excited. The first day went well and we are hopeful that this is an indication of how the rest of the school year will go.

Shop announcements:

  • Portrait Pillows are the newest way to get your custom Huggable designs! They would make a great gift for Mother’s Day. I only have the listing for a pillow with two portraits ready right now, but they will also be available with 1, 3, or 4 portraits on them. If you want to order a single, triple or quadruple Portrait Pillow right away, just send me an email and I’ll make it happen.

  • The virtual Made in Chicago Market is happening tomorrow (Saturday, April 24, 2021) and I’m pleased to be one of the vendors! As a special treat for this virtual event, gift cards will be 10% through Monday, April 26. That way, you can decide what you really want later and still get a great discount! What we’re talking about: Getting ready for the return to school was, of course, the biggest conversation topic of the week. Joanna and I talked about how it was okay to feel both excited and nervous. There were moments leading up to the big day when Joanna’s emotions overwhelmed her a little, but I think she handled it well. What do you do to calm your children’s nerves?

What we’re doing: We’ve been enjoying playing board games quite a bit lately. A few of our favorites include Go Nuts for Donuts, Gravity Maze, Labyrinth, Mancala, and Carcassonne. Do you have any recommendations for new board games to try out?

What we’re cooking: Joanna picked out this chicken and rice recipe last weekend when we were planning our meals for the week. Joanna was able to use our mini food processor to help make the salsa verde for the recipe, which turned out to be the star of the dish. It added so much bright, punchy flavor to a comforting, classic dish. We especially loved the flavor that the capers added to the sauce.

What we’re reading: Joanna got her first set of Magic Treehouse books this week and read the first one to herself with no problems at all. She seemed to really enjoy the story and is looking forward to reading the next three. Since I didn’t read with her, I don’t really have anything to say about these books. However, I do know they are quite popular, and it seems that they have captured Joanna’s attention too.

A little more work and I’ll be ready for a visit from my sister this weekend. (So excited!) I hope that you have something exciting on your calendar for this weekend too!
