This Week in Our Haven: No. 32

This week in our haven has been an in-between week. There are some weeks where my main focus is on sewing and others where it is on planning. This week was a mix of the two. I finished a really special appliquéd house project for a custom order and also started planning to become a vendor at some craft fairs and markets this summer. Planning for what is a month or two in the future for Haven Handmade (or anything else) has been a challenge so far, in part because of pandemic restrictions, but I think it’s getting a little easier. I’m hopeful at least!

Shop announcements:

  • Spring is a great time to spruce up your home a little bit. A new set of spring floral placemats would brighten up your table for the season!

What we’re talking about: We’ve been making a list of places to go and things to do as our world widens again now that coronavirus case numbers are going down and vaccination rates are going up. So far we’ve got a few local restaurants, parks, and shops on the list. I’m also looking forward to going back to museums. In particular, I really want to see the exhibit by Bisa Butler at the Art Institute of Chicago. Is there anything you’re looking forward to doing or seeing this summer?

What we’re doing: Enjoying trips to local parks is one of our favorite, simple outings. There are a few within walking distance, but our favorite is probably Palmisano Park because we enjoy the natural scenery and feeding the fish and ducks in the pond. Our favorites to drive to are McKinley Park and 31st Street Beach. McKinley Park is spacious and has a little bit of everything, while 31st Street Beach is on the lakefront path and also has a fantastic playground area.

What we’re cooking: We have made it to the time of year when we grill dinner as often as we possibly can. This week we made two pretty simple meals on the grill. One night we had grilled chicken, sweet potatoes, and broccoli. (Do you like to grill vegetables?) Another night we grilled Polish sausages to go along with potato salad. This is my favorite potato salad recipe. We even ate outside one evening and it was just so relaxing.

What we’re reading: Joanna found an old book of mine that I remember enjoying so much growing up: The Twenty-One Balloons by William Pene du Bois. She started reading it on her and seems to be enjoying it so far. Her class also started reading from the Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo and these books about a lively, lovable pig named Mercy are just pure fun.

It’s looking like we’re going to have a nice weekend for working on our gardening and landscaping, but first I will need to finish up some work in my sewing room. I hope you get out and get some sunshine this weekend too though!
