Behind the Scenes: My Sewing Room

Did you know that a tiny spare bedroom in the basement of my home serves as the workspace for Haven Handmade? It’s nothing too special to look at, but it’s functional, and I feel beyond lucky to have a whole room to myself for sewing and working. Keep reading if you’d like to see my sewing room and some of the things that make it special to me!

Let me show you my sewing table first. The table itself is pretty unique, I think. We made it ourselves using the metal treadles from two antique sewing machines as the legs and a butcher block as the top. My main sewing machine sits front and center on the table. It’s a Bernette 05 Academy, which I purchased from Quilter’s Quest last December. This definitely isn’t the fanciest machine on the market, but it’s perfect for me. I’m sure I’ll be happy sewing on it for many years to come. I also have room on my table for a Juki MO-644D serger, which is super handy for garment sewing.

In the corner to the left of my sewing table is a jumble of storage and supplies. On the wall are some shelves holding various sewing books and drawings from Joanna. They were made from the drawers that were part of the antique sewing machine cabinets. Below that I have a white cart holding miscellaneous supplies. Hiding behind and below the two Poly-fil boxes I have a cedar chest that was handmade for me as a graduation gift from my grandparents. I store extra fabric in it and I love how it keeps my fabric smelling fresh.

On the opposite wall from my sewing machine table I have another table that I use as a cutting table and as an ironing board. I also store various items underneath the table. I have to use every nook and cranny for storage since it’s a pretty small room. The last handy storage area hangs from the back of the door. It’s a series of pockets that hold my small bits of fabric and they are sorted by color. It makes it easy to find all the fabrics I need to make Huggables in exactly the colors that are ordered.

Thanks for letting me show you around! I know my sewing room probably isn’t going to inspire anyone, but I am really grateful to have this space. I love where I work and I hope Haven Handmade keeps growing so I can keep working in my sewing room.
