In My Haven: April 28

This week in my haven I got to hang out and spend time with other sewing enthusiasts at the “Pattern-palooza” event with Chicago Sews Meetup. It has been such a blessing to get involved with this group. Meeting other people who are interested in sewing and yet have wide ranging interests, skills and backgrounds has been just wonderful. My “station” for most of the event was the beginner’s table, where I went over the basics of using a commercial sewing pattern. I really felt like I was in my element as I was teaching about something that was taught to me many years ago. Learning how to read and follow a sewing pattern as a kid may not seem like a very big deal, but without that childhood experience I wouldn't be where I am today. Teaching can be both frustrating and rewarding in this way. The student may not realize until many years down the road what a gift they are receiving by having the chance to learn something. Anyway, our event was phenomenal and I sewed up a special item for it. Keep reading to see what it was!

Haven Handmade Shop

Thread Spool Keychains

I made a whole bunch of these thread spool keychains (and a few bookmarks) for the Chicago Sews Meetup event last weekend. I got so (sew?) many positive comments about them that I decided to add them to the Haven Handmade shop too! I kept one for myself and enjoy being able to carry around a little item that shows off my love of sewing. I think I'm going to release the pattern for this design, as well as a sewing tutorial, down the road. What do you think?

Candle Mat Making Workshop with Einnim

Next Saturday is my candle-mat making workshop with Einnim Candle Bar! In this workshop, you will be guided through the process of creating a custom scented candle by Einnim. Then you will learn hand stitching techniques to appliqué a coordinated mat for placing your candle on. It is going to be a great event for parents and kids to do together while bonding and learning something new! (I think Joanna is going to come along and be my assistant too.) I will have sunflower, daisy and design-your-own options and everything will be provided.

More From My Haven

Since life isn't all business, here’s a little more about what’s happening in my haven this week.

  • What I'm Cooking: I've been in a cooking-rut lately. It feels like every new recipe I've tried has been a dud. Maybe you can share a good one with me?

  • What I'm Reading: I put down The Daughters (Adrienne Celt) because my hold from the library for Under the Whispering Door (T.J. Klune) became available. I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea, so I am very excited to start reading this.

  • What Joanna is Reading: Joanna and I are continuing to read The Last Mapmaker (Christina Soontornvat) together. Her class just started to read Charlotte's Web (E.B. White) though, and I am pretty excited to hear what she thinks of this classic story.

  • What’s Making Me Happy: One really fun part of my week was taking Joanna to Palmisano Park to try flying the kite she received for her birthday.

What's happening in your haven this week?

Warmly,

Beth
