In My Haven: March 10

This week in my haven I've been thinking a lot about gifts and gift giving. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, Joanna’s birthday is coming up in a month and we've been planning for that. And second, I've been working hard at reorganizing my sewing room now that reconstruction has wrapped up and I've gotten some new closet organizers. This doesn't seem like it would spark thoughts of gift giving, except that reorganizing my sewing room was supposed to be my birthday present this year. At least that was the plan before the frozen pipe burst and made my sewing room completely unusable for several weeks and the task of reorganizing it much bigger. Even though I'm very much looking forward to having my sewing room back in working order, the reorganization process doesn't feel much like a gift any more because the circumstances and the scale of the project are completely different from what we originally planned. Anyway, this whole situation has made me reflect on what makes something a gift in the first place. Is it the occasion? Is it the thoughtfulness and intentions of the gift giver? Is it the thing itself? Or is it something else?

I personally think that the thought put into a gift is really important and is one of the ways that I show people that I love and care about them. I also love when I can help others give their recipient something truly special. My designs and products are often inspired by the moments in my own life when I've wanted to give a special gift, so gifts are on my mind pretty frequently. What gift-giving occasions do you having coming up? I would love to make something special for it!

Tulip Garden

If you love to see the tulips start popping up in the springtime, then this design is just for you! This design captures the simple elegance of tulip flowers. Don't you think? I love it as a simple basket for Easter time, but I also think it would look great on a pillow or as a wall banner. I made a few bookmarks for Midwest Nice that feature a single tulip, if that's more your thing. Do you have a favorite color of tulip that you think I should try with this appliqué?

More From My Haven

Since life isn't all business, here’s a little more about what’s happening in my haven this week.

  • What I'm Cooking: I made this Blueberry Breakfast Cake with some leftover ricotta. So yummy!

  • What I'm Listening To: I listened to this podcast episode with Kate DiCamillo and it was so beautiful.

  • What Joanna is Reading: After mentioning the interview with Kate DiCamillo, I can't not mention one of our favorite books by her: The Tale of Despereaux. Even if you don't have a kid to read it with, you'll appreciate this sweet story.

What's happening in your haven this week?

Warmly,

Beth
