This Week in Our Haven: No. 33

This week in our haven has been good in an “everything’s normal” sort of way. We worked on our yard and garden plans and even enjoyed a snack on a restaurant patio last weekend. Peter and Joanna are both back to school in-person part time during the week. I am making plans to sell at some local craft markets too. It really feels like we have been making little steps towards normalcy each week since Peter and I both got our COVID-19 vaccines. I hope that trajectory continues!

  • A listing for Quadruple Portrait Pillows with four little fabric pictures on it was added this week. Even though I won’t be able to make you one in time for Mother’s Day, you can still give a gift card to have one made for a special Mom or mother-figure in your life.

What we’re talking about: We keep talking about what we want to do this summer now that it feels like we can safely do so much more than we could last year or even last month. We’d love to be able to take a family vacation and enjoy many more of the great summertime events offered in Chicago, but it still feels a little surreal to be planning anything that is more than a month in the future. Living through a pandemic has a way of changing one’s perspective on planning ahead, doesn’t it?

What we’re doing: Hanging out in our backyard as often as the weather allows is our number one activity right now. We had our lawn re-done and it is already making a big difference. Some of our favorite backyard activities are playing bocce ball, running around with our dog, working on our garden, having an impromptu picnic, and reading books.

What we’re cooking: If you saw my Instagram story on Tuesday then you already know what we’ve been cooking this week: chocolate chip cookies! And I know that it inspired at least one other person to make some too! Our favorite recipe uses almond flour instead of all purpose flour. I forget where I got the recipe from originally because I just have it typed into a document. If you’d like me to share it with you, send me an email and I’ll reply with the recipe.

What we’re reading: Joanna and I started reading Lily to the Rescue: Dog Gone Goose by Bruce Cameron. It’s about a dog named Lily and it’s told in the first-person perspective of the dog. We both thought this was a cute aspect of the book. We are only a couple chapters in, so we’ll have to wait and see what she thinks about it at the end, but it could be a fun, new series to try.

I’m looking forward to celebrating Mother’s Day this weekend. It’s always nice to get a little extra attention and special treatment. How about you? Whatever your plans for the weekend, I hope it’s a good one!
